“How many of us can explain culture even though we talk about it in our daily life? Can different cultures be integrated?
The term culture refers to a state of intellectual development or manners. The social and political forces that influence the growth of a human being is defined as culture. The first thing that one has is cultural shock whether they travel from west to east or from east to west as what is right in east is encroaching on privacy in the west and what is freedom in the west could be termed as abash less in the east.
Talking about India , India is the first cosmopolitan country in the world. Today many of the EU countries talk about being multicultural but India became homeland for Greeks and Macedonians (some of the Greeks and Macedonians after Alexander intrusion stayed back), Huns, Kushans (Chinese) who came to India as invaders. Syrians, Jews, Persians as refugees and some Abyssinians who came as merchants but settled in India some went to become governors like Sidis of Jangira (admirals in Mughal empire), Sidis of Kurnool(under Qutubshah of Golkonda). The new era of invaders from Central Asia (Turkey, Afghanistan (which was once part of India), Mughals descendents of Chengis Khan of Mongolia followed. They brought with them the melons, candles etc. They all made Bharat as their home and a new culture evolved. European business men followed as Bharat became the richest country in the world. Portuguese, Dutch, French and English came one after the other. After independence India won Goa from Portugal. China invaded Tibet and spiritual leader of Tibetians (Dalai Lama) took shelter in India .
This is followed by east Pakistan (today’s Bangladesh) refugees. Those who stayed back enjoy the same status of Indians. Naturally culture is diverse. Today we have 6% of Benguluru city’s population distinctly European. With NRIs came the pub culture.
Drinking was considered a sin became integral part of young Indians.
We have to pause here for a moment and see how are we affected by education system in India. Cited by
"I have traveled across the length and breadth of India and I have not seen one person who is a beggar, who is a thief, such a wealth I have seen in this country. Such high moral values, people of such caliber, that I do not think we would ever conquer this country, unless we break the very backbone of this nation, which is her spiritual and cultural heritage. And therefore, I propose that we replace her old and ancient education system, her culture, for if the Indians think that all that is foreign and English is good and greater that their own, they will lose their self-esteem ,their native culture and they will become what we want them, a
truly dominated nation."
The education system designed by Lord Macaulay still continued in India but as time passed on the British replaced the old system with new methods that suits the requirements of employers in the UK. Teaching became more practical oriented in the western world but the eastern world revises the theory part and teaches the same in the classrooms there by the student has only awareness and not practically knows what is happening”.
